LAHC starts Phase 2 of Safeguarding Self-study process

We are delighted to announce the start of Phase 2 of the LAHC Safeguarding Self-study, building upon the foundation laid by the initial study conducted last year. This second phase consists of interviews with the Head and Designated Safeguarding Lead/DSL team of each LAHC school, and is designed to delve deeper into the outcomes of the self-study process.

These interviews will focus on monitoring the implementation of action plans, recognising areas of progress and achievement, identifying areas of expertise that can be shared with other schools and collaboratively exploring how LAHC can best support schools in addressing any remaining gaps.

LAHC school Colegio Colombo Británico (CCB) in Cali, Colombia was the first school to participate in Phase 2. A shout-out to CCB for their achievements in building a thriving safeguarding culture!

In initiating Phase 2 of the Self Study follow-up, CCB has demonstrated exceptional commitment to student wellbeing. Head of School, Nick Reeves, along with Child Protection Officer (DSL), Ximena Hurtado and Andrés Felipe de Francisco, School Lawyer and member of the Child Protection Committee, enthusiastically shared their achievements, challenges and initiatives since starting their safeguarding journey a few years ago. It’s noteworthy that additional advances have been made as a result of carrying out the LAHC study last year.

When asked what they consider to be contributing factors to their sustained progress, they identified the following aspects:
  • The right people in the right positions who are passionate about what they do
  • Using a traffic light system to label gaps and attending to the ones in red first
  • The multi-disciplinary protection committee working as a strong and cohesive team that embraces an “open door” approach in listening to everyone and focusing on needs
  • A whole school initiative with a voice of authority at the top. They emphasize that success depends upon commitment, support and motivation coming from leadership which permeates the community.
Congratulations CCB! Your efforts are a testament to what can be accomplished with the right people, systems, and a genuine passion for creating a safe and nurturing learning environment.

We look forward to many more inspirational meetings with all LAHC schools!
